Live in care Islington - driving winter

To help you drive safely without putting yourself or others on the road at risk, here are a few tips from the Concept Care team. Happy Christmas, one and all!

With wintry weather now starting to set in, it’s important to be particularly careful when out and about to prevent accidents from taking place – especially if you’re going to be getting behind the wheel of a car, which is highly likely over the Christmas period when you’re sure to want to visit friends, family and loved ones.

While, no doubt, you feel very confident as an older driver, with a wealth of experience to fall back on, it’s important to remember that driving skills can decline over time and the signs of this are often very subtle.

Cold weather can make it harder to perform the physical movements required to drive, with joint pain and stiffness having an impact and potentially making it more dangerous for you to navigate the roads.

Not only that but the darker days means you’re more likely to drive in poor light conditions, which is why it’s important to have regular eye tests (at least every two years) to ensure that you’re safe to drive.

To help you stay safe and secure, without putting yourself or others on the road at risk, here are a few top tips from the Concept Care team. If you need any further help or advice, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Share the driving

If you’ve got a long way to go, leave as early as you can and if there’s someone else going with you, split up the journey so you both take turns behind the wheel, giving each of you time to rest, keeping fatigue at bay.

Check the car

Before you go, make sure the car is ready to rock and roll, reducing the chances of a breakdown. Keep the tyres pumped up, check the water and oil levels, make sure the windscreen wipers work, there are no broken lights and that the tank is full. You may want to consider having the car serviced before you travel just to be on the safe side.

Charge your phone

Just in case of an emergency, make sure that you have full battery on your phone so you can call for help if necessary. Also write down some phone numbers on a piece of paper to keep in the car, in case of technological malfunctions.

Take plenty of food and water

Preparation is key, so always make sure the car is stocked with water and food so you have sustenance in case you find yourself stranded for whatever reason.

Pack blankets and clothes

Keeping warm is essential at this time of year but if the car breaks down, you’ll find yourself cold sooner rather than later. Keep an extra supply of clothes and blankets in the car so you can stay warm no matter what.

Don’t rush

It’s tempting, of course, to try to get to your destination as quickly as possible but this can increase the risk of accidents so take your time, enjoy the journey and just accept that you’ll get there when you get there.
