Getting Ready for The Digital Switchover: Our Top Tips

Digital technology is fast becoming all-encompassing, with the Internet of Things helping to support connectivity between a vast array of different devices – with the aim being to make our lives easier across the board.

The move to digital includes the replacement of landline telephones, with the UK’s telephone network soon to go digital and the old copper network turned off in January 2027.

Anyone with a landline service alongside their broadband will be affected by the forthcoming changes, so it’s essential that migration to digital landline services is carried out successfully so that people who rely on their landlines have seamless access to reliable services.

For older people, the development may be distressing news to hear, with the Independent reporting that pensioners and disabled people are worried that they could be at risk as their landline services are phased out.

Speaking to the news source, for example, 71-year-old Heather – who has severe osteoarthritis – explained that she’s “very concerned” about the changes because she lives on her own and needs her landline to contact people if she needs help.

She went on to say: “I have friends who are still not aware that the landline is going to go in a couple of years. There are hundreds and thousands of people with no IT experience who depend on their lifelines.”

When the switchover happens, instead of using copper wires, new phone services will be reliant on broadband. However, one big challenge to take into account is that not everyone in the UK will have access to high-speed internet. Older people and others who rely on personal alarms are also concerned, because these are currently synced to landlines.

How to prepare for the digital switchover

BT has published a guide to Digital Voice, which is its new home phone service powered by a broadband connection. For most people, switching will be as easy as just connecting the home phone handset you already have to a router instead of a phone socket on the wall.

Battery backup units will also be made available to those that need them to ensure that connections are maintained even in the event of a power cut. Furthermore, customers with additional needs can also take advantage of free support on request.

If you do have a personal alarm or any other kind of telecare device, make sure you let your phone company know so they can make any necessary arrangements to ensure your security. Also get in touch with the equipment provider to see if you need to have any system or tech upgrades before the switchover takes place.

The sooner you make the switch the better, so now’s the perfect time to do a bit of reading and research to find out more about what’s happening and why. If you need any help or advice, or just want to talk it through with your private nurse, give the Concept Care team a call today.
