How Do I Get Respite Care For My Child In The UK?

Looking after a child with different needs is, of course, very rewarding but it can also be incredibly demanding, both physically and emotionally, so it’s important that you check in with yourself regularly and are honest with yourself about how you’re feeling to ensure that you take the breaks you need.

It can feel selfish and as though you’re shirking your responsibilities by taking these breaks, but always remember that you put your own mental, emotional and physical health at risk by ignoring your own needs and sacrificing other areas of your own life to provide this level of care.

Push yourself too far and you won’t be able to provide the support that your child needs.

As such, you may want to investigate the very real benefits of respite care, where you can bring in a private nurse or other healthcare provider to ensure that your little one receives the very best care in a safe and comfortable environment, including everything from personal care and meal prep to mobility assistance and companionship.

These carers can also help you with other duties, including household tasks and light cleaning where necessary.

One key consideration, naturally, is how to access this kind of care. To help point you in the right direction, here’s a quick guide for funding respite care for children.

How do you access respite care for children?

Your local council will only provide access to respite care if an assessment shows that you need assistance. Get in touch with the children with disabilities department at your local council and ask for a carer’s assessment. This can be done over the phone or online.

These assessments typically last for an hour or thereabouts, during which time a council representative will ask questions about how well you’re coping, including how the care you provide affects your physical and mental health, as well as your relationships, leisure time and professional life.

Make sure that you provide as much detail as you can about the impact that providing this care for your child has on you, as this will ensure that you receive the requisite help and support.

It is also possible that the council will help you with the costs associated with respite care but a financial assessment (means test) will also need to be carried out. You may also find that you qualify for carers benefits, which can also prove helpful with funding.

If, following your means test, it’s determined that you don’t qualify for financial help, make sure your council provides you with free advice about where you can source assistance elsewhere.

If you’re confused about the process or have a few more questions about what the assessments involve, get in touch with the Concept Care team today.
