Food Is Care: Understanding South Asian Diets In Home Care

One aspect of care provision that we often get asked about by clients and their families when enquiring about our culturally attuned Asian home care services is dietary requirements and food.

This is perhaps unsurprising given how deeply rooted food is among this demographic, both in terms of cultural tradition and religious practices alike.

Naturally, the concern often is that specific observances will not be upheld or missed – but let us take the time to reassure you now that this is never the case and we always strive to ensure that all our clients’ specific needs and preferences are taken into account when devising specific care plans, plans that are always tailored to suit the individual.

Wherever possible, we also make sure that family members and relatives are involved in meal planning and preparation so as to ensure that traditional recipes and cooking techniques are followed… so don’t be afraid to let us know if there are any dishes we should put on the list to mark certain occasions.

Hinduism

Our knowledge of the dietary restrictions associated with Hinduism allow us to put specific meal plans together, accounting for requirements such as lacto-vegetarianism, no beef consumption and how food is sourced and prepared.

We also ensure that any fasting periods are observed (where appropriate for patients) during festivals such as Ekadash and Navrati, providing sattvic foods at these times of year.

Islam

Meal plans are available that take halal guidelines into account, with pork and its derivatives avoided entirely, and production practices assured. Furthermore, we ensure that Ramadan is observable by our patients and put measures in place to ensure that this is possible.

Ingredients

South Asian cuisine is renowned for being abundant in legumes, fruits and fresh vegetables – and, of course, we know that this is essential for maintaining good health and wellbeing, which is why we prioritise such ingredients in care packages without fail.

Traditional dishes are certainly something we can accommodate, so please do chat to a member of the team to find out more about this aspect of our care provision.

The Concept Care approach to Asian home care

You’ll find that our approach to Asian home care is highly involved and we work closely with all our clients and their families to develop a deeper understanding of the dietary, cultural and linguistic preferences that they may have.

The Concept Care team itself is incredibly diverse and we have many caregivers who are either from Asian backgrounds themselves or who have undergone significant cultural awareness training so that they can deliver the highest standards of care, no matter what.

From daily routines to dietary preferences and spiritual observances, we’re always on hand to support and uphold an extensive array of Asian cultural values. If you’d like to find out more, get in touch with the team today.
