3 Ways To Keep Older Loved Ones Warm And Well This Autumn

All hope of an Indian summer has long passed us by and we’re well and truly into autumn now, with lots of wind and rain battering the country over the last few days and temperatures taking a very noticeable dip.

As lovely as a change in the seasons can most certainly be, it’s essential that you check in on elderly loved ones over the next few weeks and months to make sure that they’re healthy, happy and warm as the long nights start to draw in around us.

To help you do just that, here are three top tips from the Concept Care team. As ever, if you need any further help or advice, get in touch with the team today.

1. Focus on warmth

One of the top priorities for older people at this time of year is keeping warm, whether at home or while out and about.

At home, aim to keep occupied rooms warmed to at least 18 degrees C, keep the curtains closed at night to trap heat in the house and install draught excluders where necessary around doors and windows to keep out any cold air.

Wearing thick socks and slippers (with good grip to prevent slips, trips and falls) can help you stay warm and snug throughout the day, and wearing warm pyjamas and various layers can keep you warm while you sleep. You can also use the likes of hot water bottles, electric blankets and heated pads if you really feel the cold.

If outside, wearing lots of thin layers can help you trap heat, with the different layers acting as insulation, helping you to stay warm. You’re also able to take layers on and off to adjust for changes in temperature, maximising comfort levels.

2. Focus on diet & nutrition

Warming yourself from the inside out is a great way to beat the cold at this time of year – and there are so many delicious seasonal recipes to choose from, you’ll never find yourself bored of eating the same thing over and over again.

Hot meals and drinks will raise your body temperature and it’s not called comfort food without good reason! Take a look at some of these wonderful dishes to see what you might like to whip up next. If you’re heading outside, consider taking a thermos of hot soup or a warm drink so you have something toasty on the go at all times.

3. Focus on respite care

It can be easy to forget about yourself when taking care of a loved one, particularly during the autumn and winter months that can be especially difficult to navigate.

Make sure that you’re taking care of yourself as well as your friends and family so that you’re better able to provide the best level of support that you can.

This is where respite care really comes into its own, giving you the time you need to take a proper break and focus on other areas of your life without having to worry that your loved one’s care will be compromised.
