Combating Loneliness This Autumn: The Power Of Companionship Care

As lovely as this time of year can be and as wonderful as it undoubtedly is to watch the seasons change, the start of autumn can really take its toll on our mental health if we’re not careful, as daylight hours start to reduce and the nights get both longer and colder.

Feelings of loneliness and isolation can really start to make their presence felt in autumn and winter, with fewer opportunities to get out and about with family and friends. It’s easy to feel disconnected as time goes on and this can really affect your mood, leading to increased risk of mental health conditions like anxiety and even depression.

But there are various ways you can help yourself or your loved ones if you do find it hard to adjust from summer to autumn, such as getting regular exercise, trying to spend time outside as much as possible during daylight hours, planning regular activities with loved ones, getting enough sleep and following a healthy and well-balanced diet.

However, there’s another option to consider if you feel as though everything’s overwhelming at the moment – and that’s companionship care.

What is companionship care?

Companionship care is a brilliant option – and, indeed, a very real lifeline – for anyone who’s finding it hard to maintain their independence, where a professional and experienced carer comes to spend time with you at home.

Their main aim is to help prevent you from feeling lonely, but the option is also there for them to help with personal care, medication, housework, chores, meal preparation and so on.

They can also help you get out of the house more often so you can take part in your favourite hobbies, activities and pursuits, with a friend by yourself who’s always on hand for a chat and a cup of tea.

Social isolation, where contact with others becomes more difficult as you get older, can lead to increased stress levels and loneliness, but companionship care can help prevent this from becoming a problem.

Whether your carer comes to see you for a couple of hours a week or on a more regular schedule, the purpose is to develop a genuine and lasting friendship and a meaningful human connection that extends beyond the more typical care that a nurse or healthcare professional would provide.

Companions focus more on friendship and emotional support, rather than delivering extensive medical assistance or help with personal care (although they can provide light services of this kind, as well).
