Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July, giving disabled people the opportunity to come together as a community, share their experiences and drive conversations about the issues that are most important to them.
It’s not just for disabled people, however, and anyone who wants to demonstrate their allyship can do so this month (as well as throughout the year, of course) by celebrating their disabled communities.
The movement itself first started back in 1990 in Boston, the same year that the US Disabilities Act was passed – and it’s gone from strength to strength ever since, becoming a month of international renown.
Raising awareness of the concerns facing disabled people while embracing disability identity positively, as well as challenging negative attitudes holding people back, are the key aims of this Pride Month (not to be confused with LGBTQ+ Pride, which is an entirely separate event), important since the majority of disabled people still experience unfair treatment and harmful stereotypes.
Disability pride in home care
Disability Pride Month is a campaign that the Concept Care team wholeheartedly supports. We work closely with all sorts of clients around the UK providing them with fully tailored and bespoke packages of support that cater for their disabilities, whatever they may be, so that they continue to receive only the highest standards of care no matter what.
We support people with long-term disabilities, of course, but also anyone recovering from extensive injuries or who has just been through major surgery. Whatever the needs of our clients, we dedicate our lives to ensuring that they receive compassionate and expert care.
The most important aspect of our care plan provision is the individual approach we adopt. We understand that no two people have the same experience of disability, regardless of whether they have similar symptoms or their cases have similarities.
Everyone receives a fully bespoke care plan that takes their specific requirements into account, ensuring that we can provide the best level of care possible while ensuring that people can continue living in the comfort of their own home, without having to worry about compromising their safety, wellbeing or overall quality of life.
But it’s not just our clients that we’re on hand to support… we’re also here to help family and friends, as well.
It can be incredibly challenging to look after a disabled loved one and this is where our respite care service really comes into its own, giving friends and relatives the opportunity to focus on other aspects of their lives without worrying that they’ll be abandoning their responsibilities and putting people at risk.
If you’d like to take part in this year’s Disability Pride Month, now’s the perfect time to listen to disabled people, educate yourself more deeply on disability issues and demonstrate that you stand in solidarity with the disabled community.
