This time of year can be very hectic and frenzied, so much so that it can take its toll on our health.
With so much to do and sort out before December 25th, it’s hardly a surprise if other aspects of our lives are sacrificed, from good-quality sleep to healthy eating.
This, coupled with the terrible weather, can mean that we quickly succumb to any colds and bugs doing the rounds.
For older people, it becomes even more essential to keep the immune system in excellent working condition – so here are some top festive tips from the Concept Care team to help you or a loved one stave off nasty colds so you can enjoy all of the seasonal fun without a worry.
1. Follow a well-balanced diet
Eating a diet rich in fresh fruit, vegetables and protein is the best way to ensure that you get all the nutrients you need to give your immune system a boost.
The Mediterranean diet is widely accepted as one of the healthiest to follow, complete with fruit and veg, wholegrains, nuts and legumes, but also lean protein sources like fish and seafood, with minimal red meat and dairy.
You can also consider taking supplements to bridge any gaps but note that this should only be done following a chat with your GP and should not be used as an alternative to proper food-based nutrition.
2. Manage stress
Interestingly, too much stress can have a big impact on your immune system and how successfully you keep illness at bay.
Studies show that the immune system is susceptible to chronic stress, which can exert an immunosuppressive effect that impacts the body’s ability to initiate efficient and appropriate immune reactions.
Tackle this by talking to those closest to you about how you’re feeling, getting some exercise, heading out into nature (weather permitting!), practising mindfulness exercises and avoiding alcohol.
3. Connect with other people
Did you know that maintaining close positive relationships with other people is good for your health? It can actually lower blood pressure and improve heart function, so try to socialise as much as you can at this time of year. Even talking on the phone can make a big difference!
If you or a loved one is less mobile and at risk of loneliness and isolation, consider investing in services like companionship care, where a care provider comes to spend time with you in your own home, whether that’s for a few hours a week or for as long as you need.
4. Wash your hands
Finally, one of the best lines of defence in keeping colds away at this time of year is to practise good hand hygiene at all times.
Handwashing with soap for 20 seconds each time will remove nasty germs from your hands, helping to prevent infection as germs enter the body through the eyes, nose and mouth. Bacteria can also get into food and drink during preparation, potentially making you sick, as well.
