South Asian Heritage Month is now well underway, taking place annually between July 17th and August 18th, commemorating and celebrating the diverse cultures, communities and histories of South Asia, with the theme for 2025 set as Roots to Routes.
Over the next few weeks, various events, exhibitions, panel discussions and workshops will be taking place around the UK, exploring themes such as migration and movement, heritage and tradition, identity and belonging, legacies and future generations, connection and community, and routes of influence.
Culturally appropriate care
Here at Concept Care, we always participate in heritage month events and work to ensure that we’re sensitive to our client’s cultural identities and heritages, ever vigilant of and responsive to conventions and beliefs that may be different to our own and which may have an impact on the services we provide.
Delivering culturally appropriate care (also known as culturally competent care) is of paramount importance to us and our staff members have been specifically trained with this in mind, so that clients can be supported in culturally sensitive ways, ensuring that preferences are always taken on board and properly respected.
We also make sure that people and their families and loved ones are fully involved in care plan development, with all needs identified with equality characteristics in mind to find the best ways in which they can be met.
Person-centred care is at the heart of all we do here at Concept Care, with an array of wonderful benefits to be reaped through working in this way.
The benefits
Cultural competence in social care helps to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction through a greater understanding of patient needs, as well as reducing health disparities among different cultural groups.
By deepening our knowledge and understanding of cultural factors that influence health-related behaviours and outcomes, we do valuable work in reducing these differences.
We also find that by working in a culturally sensitive manner we’re able to build trust with our clients more effectively, which ultimately helps to support good communication and collaboration… essential for delivering high standards of care.
Holistic care is something that we always strive to deliver and prioritising cultural sensitivity certainly helps us achieve this. It allows us to devise bespoke treatment plans that take physical health into account, of course, but also emotional and spiritual wellbeing, which is absolutely vital for comprehensive patient care.
If we didn’t work in this way, it’s entirely possible that patients’ symptoms, behaviours and beliefs could be misinterpreted, resulting in poor and ineffective treatment plans and health concerns potentially being missed.
It’s also possible that people would end up feeling alienated or losing trust in the healthcare system, with the knock-on effect of this being reduced likelihood of seeking out medical advice or necessary care.
At Concept Care, we deliver culturally attuned Asian home care, supporting Asian individuals receiving care, as well as those working in the sector. If you’d like to find out more, get in touch with the team today.
